In den frühen Sechzigern gründete George Young in Australien gemeinsam mit dem Lead-Gitarristen Harry Vanda die populären The Easybeats (›Friday On My Mind‹). Nach deren Auflösung 1969 arbeiteten beide als Produzenten und Songwriter: Unter anderem ermöglichten sie John Paul Young 1978 den Disco-Hit ›Love Is In The Air‹.

In den frühen Siebzigern initiierten sie das Studio-Projekt Marcus Hook Roll Band, in dem sie den 20-jährigen Malcolm Young und dessen zwei Jahre jüngeren Bruder Angus unterbrachten (Tales Of Old Grand-Daddy), ehe diese mit AC/DC zu einer Weltkarriere starteten: George Young und Harry Vanda produzierten in der Folge Klassiker wie High Voltage (1975), T.N.T. (1975), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976), Let There Be Rock (1977), Powerage (1978), Blow Up Your Video (1988) — Stiff Upper Lip bearbeitete Young im Jahr 2000 schließlich alleine.

Am Morgen des 23. Oktobers veröffentlichten AC/DC folgendes Statement:

»It is with pain in our heart that we have to announce the passing of our beloved brother and mentor George Young. Without his help and guidance there would not have been an AC/DC.
As a musician, songwriter, producer, advisor and much, much more, you could not ask for a more dedicated and professional man. As a brother, you could not ask for a finer brother. For all he did and gave to us throughout his life, we will always remember him with gratitude and hold him close to our hearts.«
