Kaum ein Musiker, Frank Sinatra vielleicht ausgenommen, wird so sehr mit New York City assoziiert wie Billy Joel. Immer wieder verarbeitete der singende Pianist Beobachtungen aus seiner Heimatstadt in Songs — besonders auf Turnstiles: Nachdem er einige Jahre in Los Angeles gelebt hatte, kehrte er 1976 in die Ostküstenmetropole zurück, wo sein viertes Werk entstand.
Geplant war das zunächst nicht, wie sich auch auf der Edition zum 50. Jubiläum des Albums nachvollziehen lässt: Zunächst arbeitete Joel in Colorado gemeinsam mit Bassist Dee Murray und Schlagzeuger Nigel Olsson aus der Band von Elton John an neuem Material. Aufnahmen aus diesen bisher unveröffentlichten Sessions gehören zu den Highlights der Neu-Veröffentlichung: ›Prelude/Angry Young Man‹, ›I've Loved These Days‹, ›James‹ und ›Everybody Has A Dream‹ sind in diesen Versionen in der Box enthalten.
Generell sind weite Teile von Turnstiles (50th Anniversary Edition) bisher nicht auf Tonträgern erschienen: Demos, Alternativ-Versionen und Studio-Outtakes sowie ein kompletter Live-Mitschnitt aus dem Bottom Line in New York vom 10. Juni 1976 machen 54 der insgesamt 67 Titel der Neu-Veröffentlichung aus.
Neben vier CDs enthält die Box außerdem eine Blu-Ray mit Konzert-Dokumenten. Ein 40-seitiges Booklet mit bisher unveröffentlichten Fotos und neuen Liner-Notes von David Fricke und John Jackson, dem Leiter des Billy-Joel-Archivs, rundet das Set ab. Turnstiles (50th Anniversary Edition) erscheint am 11. Dezember.
